The end of January showed two sides of the same market. A well-run furniture brand could protect its profits even as customers wrote fewer orders, while weaker operators ran out of room.
The short version
- Ethan Allen's sales slipped and its written orders fell steeply, but its gross margin improved.
- Consumer confidence fell to its lowest level since 2014, and plans to buy furniture declined.
- Buddy Mac Holdings, a large franchisee of Buddy's Home Furnishings, was in Chapter 11 and moving toward a sale.
Ethan Allen protects the margin
Ethan Allen reported second-quarter sales down 4.7% to $149.9 million. Retail written orders fell 17.9% and wholesale written orders fell 19.3%, which the company tied to economic pressure, the government shutdown and a tough comparison with the year before. Gross margin still edged up to 60.9%.
That pairing is the lesson. Ethan Allen makes much of what it sells and controls its own stores, so it can hold price when demand softens. Written orders are the early signal, though, and a drop that size usually shows up in delivered sales a quarter or two later.
Confidence hits a 12-year low
The Conference Board's index fell to 84.5 in January, its lowest reading since 2014. The release said plans to buy refrigerators, dishwashers, furniture and TVs all decreased, and homebuying expectations kept retreating.
When furniture is named directly in a confidence survey, it usually isn't good news. Big purchases are the first thing people postpone.
A rent-to-own franchisee heads for a sale
Buddy Mac Holdings, a franchisee of Buddy's Home Furnishings, had filed for Chapter 11 in December 2025, and its stores were headed for a court-supervised sale.
Update, October 2026. The lender ended up buying substantially all of the business, and the case was converted to Chapter 7 on August 11, 2026, according to the docket.
Where this left the industry at the end of January
Strong operators were defending margins and waiting for orders to come back. The rest were finding out how long they could wait.
