Furniture Retail Closures Surge as Industry Enters Reset Mode

Furniture store closings piled up in early 2026, Bed Bath & Beyond moved into home services and imports kept falling as fuel costs rose.

Originally published April 9, 2026. This version was rebuilt from Court docket, Bed Bath & Beyond and NRF releases for the FIN archive, and the facts are as of that date.

The first quarter of 2026 brought a steady run of furniture store closings. Some were retirements with no one to take over, and some were businesses that ran out of money. A few companies were using the moment to expand.

The short version

  • Store closings came from both retirements and financial failures.
  • Bed Bath & Beyond signed a letter of intent to buy the owner of Cabinets To Go and Lumber Liquidators.
  • Imports fell from a year earlier in February as tariffs and fuel costs weighed on shippers.

A wave of closings

Many of the closings announced in early 2026 were long-running family stores whose owners were retiring without a successor. Others were failures. Circle Furniture, a Massachusetts retailer, filed a Chapter 7 petition on January 30.

Each closing left a small gap in its market. For the stores that remained, those were customers to win, and delivery and service staff to hire.

Bed Bath & Beyond builds home services

Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. signed a letter of intent to acquire F9 Brands, owner of Cabinets To Go and Lumber Liquidators, at a headline price of nearly $150 million. The deal was part of a push into home services that pair products with installation.

Update. The F9 deal was terminated in September 2026.

Imports keep falling

NRF's Global Port Tracker counted 1.95 million TEU in February, down 4.2% from a year earlier, and pointed to tariffs and rising fuel prices as headwinds for the months ahead.

Reset mode

The industry was shrinking at the edges while larger players repositioned. Survivors had a chance to pick up customers, if they could manage costs through a slow spring.
