The deadline for higher tariffs on Chinese goods was hours away when the President signed an extension on August 11, 2025. Furniture importers got three more months to plan.
The short version
- An executive order extended the China tariff suspension to November 10.
- Census showed June furniture store sales up 4.5% from a year earlier.
Another 90 days
Executive Order 14334 kept the higher reciprocal tariffs on China suspended through November 10, 2025, citing ongoing talks. Without it, rates on Chinese goods would have jumped back toward the April levels.
The extension gave buyers time to place holiday and spring orders at known rates, but it was temporary. Importers still had reason to diversify sourcing rather than count on another reprieve.
Update. A November 2025 order extended the suspension through November 10, 2026.
Sales still ahead of last year
The most recent Census data at the time showed June sales at furniture and home furnishings stores down 0.1% from May but up 4.5% from a year earlier. Month-to-month sales were bumpy, but the yearly trend had stayed positive.
Factories report steady orders
The ISM report for July, released August 1, put the manufacturing PMI at 48%, but furniture and related products was one of the industries reporting growth. It was the only industry with growing export orders and one of three with growing order backlogs. A furniture respondent described business as steady, with solid bookings and backlog, while noting continued uncertainty about tariffs and inflation.
Use the window
The extension bought time, not certainty. Retailers and importers who used the window to lock in orders and line up backup suppliers were better prepared for the next deadline.
